Introducing the Women in Caribbean Aquaculture (WiCA)
As we progress, the Caribbean Aquaculture Network has formed a Planning Team comprised primarily of Women Scientists contributing to the growth of aquaculture in the region.
Unlike other regions of the world, the Caribbean has a high percentage of women in STEM. In fact this is what we have seen in the last year from the persons that have subscribed to this network The majority of persons from the Caribbean who have advanced degrees in aquaculture are Women.
A recent UNESCO report stated that Worldwide, 30 percent of researchers are women.
45.2% of the people doing research in science and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean are women, a higher percentage than the average of other regions (Oceania 39.2%, Africa 34.5%, Europe 34%, Asia 18.9%,)
So it was not difficult to decide who would be making the decisions for the growth of the Caribbean Aquaculture Network. Our planning Team comprises of 10 female scientists and 1 male scientist from around the Caribbean specializing in various sectors. (Read more about Ricardo Morris in our last post).
With accumulated education and experiences we will pursue our vision to change the perception of sustainable aquaculture to be recognized as a part of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and its importance to our region.
You can find out more about our Team on LinkedIn, Profiles to be found in the archives of this newsletter and features in the online magazine the Fish.com
We believe Aquaculture should be included in STEM curriculum
There is a dire need for more scientists within the Caribbean actively pursuing innovation, research and development to increase the data base needed to enhance mariculture & aquaculture. The more scientists we have the better we as a people and region can make the correct decisions for our countries rather than depending on the data that is accumulated for other regions eg. Europe or Asia.

We are excited and proud to announce Biomar group of companies has become a sponsor for Women in Caribbean Aquaculture. Under the guidance of the Global Marketing Director, Katherine Bryar, we have made great strides with the planning team. We are profoundly appreciative of her belief and support in our vision to see Aquaculture and Mariculture taken to the next level in the Caribbean.
Biomar will be sponsoring attendance to conferences as there is a need for more of a Caribbean presence. The upcoming Latin American & Caribbean chapter of the World Aquaculture Society (LACAQUA23) is an example of this need for representation.
