PROFILE
Celebrating women in aquaculture: Mia Avril
Mia was born and raised in Castries, Saint Lucia. She has worked and lived in Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominica and the Bahamas for the last 12 years. She has always had a love for the environment, particularly marine life. “I always favored natural sciences and by the time I went off to undergrad I opted to pursue a BSc in Environmental and Natural Resource Management, with a minor in Marine Biology. That is where I was formally introduced to aquaculture. I got the opportunity to go to Fiji on a scholarship to study marine science at a post graduate level, however in deciding what specifically I wanted to study, I decided to undertake a project that could literally feed me. This led me to aquaculture, and more specifically aquaponics”.
