Every year, 22 million fishes from around the world are harvested from coral reefs to stock marine aquariums in homes, offices, and public aquaria. The U.S. is the largest global consumer, importing half of global demand. For some source countries, these fisheries are not well managed. This can result in ecosystem imbalances on coral reefs, for example by harvesting important herbivores that keep algae at bay, allowing coral to grow.
Aquaculture can provide a sustainable alternative source of fishes for this trade, especially for those species vulnerable to fishing pressure in the wild.Â
Aquaculture can also be a tool to restock herbivores to reefs, helping to tip the scales in favor of corals.Â
In this talk, we'll explore low-tech options for cultured Caribbean fishes, offer guidance in selecting species, and help Caribbean aquaculturists understand their connection to ports of entry in the U.S. aquarium market. Â

Dr. Paul Anderson’s childhood fascination with marine aquariums fueled his drive to pursue an education and career in marine science. Today, he is a Fisheries Scientist with a broad background in the conduct of conservation research, education, and outreach to inspire people to learn about and engage to conserve our marine environments. He has done so throughout his career from the context of public aquaria because of this sector’s ability to change the minds and behaviors of millions of visitors annually.
