It has been one year since we found each other!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Spread throughout the Caribbean and the diaspora we met each other via Zoom during the lockdown moments of the pandemic. We spent hours getting to know each other through late-night Zoom calls so that we could reach all continents. We had no idea that so many women from the Caribbean had continued their studies overseas, e.g. England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Australia, and neither did the world for that matter. Many of us remained overseas and became absorbed by the countries of our residency because of the difficulty in finding positions in our home countries. But with the knowledge and experiences that we have gained we are determined to contribute to the region.
Although there are many women working in the aquaculture sector, little is known about us or the fields in which we operate. Feeling disconnected we reached out and connected with those that were working in the Caribbean. In the summer of 2022, we started a loosely formed group to connect women scientists in the diaspora with others working in the Caribbean. Thanks to the sponsorship of BioMar and the support of Katherine Bryar we formally became Women in Caribbean Aquaculture (WiCA) in the spring of 2023. Because of their belief in our vision, we have made the last seven months a very fruitful and impactful one.
We mentor women who want to learn more or need support to get to the next level in their careers; Scientists, Extension Agents, Farmers, Entrepreneurs, Academics
Our network connects women interested in advancing aquaculture, mariculture, aquaponics, and environmental science in the region. Within the Caribbean, we feel that there are so many misconceptions when it comes to aquaculture, and as scientists we are here to dispel them. As a result, our focus is on education, training, research, and innovation.
In one year we have made connections in Jamaica, Belize, Guyana, The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St.Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Panama, Mexico, and Colombia. We have also connected with other aquaculturists through our free webinars from 48 countries globally
We connect Caribbean nationals and those working in Caribbean Aquaculture to a global aquaculture network.
Thanks to the enthusiasm, excitement, and passion of these amazing women - You made it happen. They have been the reason for the formation of our recent umbrella organization Caribbean Aquaculture Education and Innovation Hub (CAEIH). As a group, we put together a team of scientists that represent all the sectors in Aquaculture. If you have not yet, please see the women who make up our team on our website.
We are on a mission to change the perception of aquaculture in the Caribbean; to focus on the relevance and need in Caribbean small islands #mariculture #aquaponics #bluefoods #foodsecurity; aquaculture to be included in #stemeducation
